Release on License A person who is sentenced to 12 months or more in prison, upon release from prison, will be supervised by the Probation service for the remainder of their sentence. So, for example, a person sentenced to 12 months imprisonment would usually serve 6 months in prison, and then spend six months in the community supervised by Probation. This is known as being ‘on licence’.
